IRC channel move announcement (public) === Subject: Real-time discussions for Software Heritage are moving to IRC channels on libera.chat, bridged to native matrix rooms ! Hi, The freenode IRC network, which we've been using for our real time discussions since the inception of Software Heritage, has recently undergone a sudden change in leadership ([LWN.net coverage](https://lwn.net/Articles/857140/), [partial timeline of events](https://gist.github.com/joepie91/df80d8d36cd9d1bde46ba018af497409)). All the volunteer staff has resigned, and has been replaced with new staff put in place by the purported owner of the Freenode brand. After some [consideration and discussion](https://forge.softwareheritage.org/T3341), we've decided that Software Heritage no longer wants to associate with the freenode IRC network, and we're moving our IRC presence to the new [libera.chat network](https://libera.chat/), created by the former volunteer staffers of freenode. We've also used this change of IRC network to improve the way we're managing our presence on matrix, for team members who use it. We now have native matrix rooms plumbed to IRC, which means that we should be able to transparently migrate bridges to other IRC networks or protocols as we see fit, in the future. You can find us on the following IRC channels: - [#swh-devel](ircs://irc.libera.chat:6697/#swh-devel,ischannel) for development discussions - [#swh-sysadm](ircs://irc.libera.chat:6697/#swh-sysadm,ischannel) for system administration discussions The team at libera.chat provides [a set of guides to setup your IRC client for the new network](https://libera.chat/guides/clients). Matrix users can find us with the following: Individual matrix channels are bridged to the aforementioned IRC channels, and available via the following direct links: - [Software Heritage development](https://matrix.to/#/#swh-devel:matrix.org?via=matrix.org) - [Software Heritage system administration](https://matrix.to/#/#swh-sysadm:matrix.org?via=matrix.org) Since the latest moves by freenode management (split network, empty services database), please consider the old channels abandoned. We're unfortunately unable to signpost the new channels there, as that would be contrary to Freenode's new policies. Please spread the word! See you on libera.chat, Nicolas "olasd" Dandrimont
